Hey Wishloopers…
Its World Emoji Day (July 17th) ๐
And its fair to say… emojis have well and truly taken over the world ๐
Thereโs no denying their popularity.
Driven by the explosion in instant messaging theyโre as much a part of everyday life as morning coffee and Netflix.
And that even extends to business life too…
- Blog posts
- Facebook ads
- Sales pages
- Chat bots
- Emails
- Customer service announcements
…Heck they even have their own movie

So what the ๐คฌ is going on here?
Not to be confused with the emoticon, which is simply a collection of regular punctuation : )ย ;pย ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ , emojis were originally created to express emotion, and to substitute body language and tone of voice in text-based (digital) communication.
And it worked.
A single emoji can convey emotion much more succinctly than the written word can.
Just take a look at this example ๐

Okโฆ so while emojis canโt necessarily replace words, they can definitely give them that little extra oomph needed to excite, persuade, or arouse curiosity.
They can enhance and enforce the meaning of your message… theyโre the ๐ on top.
And theyโre truly universal and inclusive…
A grandmother from Japan can just as easily understand the complex emotion expressed by the tears of joy emoji ๐, as a teenager in Brazil.
No language barriers here: ๐ฏ๐ต โค๏ธ ๐ง๐ท
BTW: In 2015, the Oxford Dictionary named the ๐ Tears of Joy ๐ emoji as the word of the year!
And whether its adding humour to a blog post; expressing irony in a social update, embarrassment, stress, shock, fear… thereโs an emoji for that. ๐
But is the ๐ฒ really an upgrade over the simple exclamation mark (!) ?
Say it with a ๐
In business communication, emojis are often used to soften negative messages, such as rejections, requests, or complaints.
I’m sorry, your application was unsuccessful at this time. However we wish you the very best in the future ๐
But what if I told you that these little guys could also have a major impact on your click-through rates, signup rates, open rates, and general engagement levels?
That kind of changes the game, huh? ๐
In fact, Iโd encourage everyone to try sprinkling a dash of emoji magic ๐งโโ๏ธ into their marketing. And throughout the whole customer journey…

If youโre a regular reader of this blog, our emails or follow us on social media youโll have noticed weโve already adopted this.
But is it all just a fad or a trend?
Will the use of emojis die out or continue to grow in popularity? ๐ or ๐ ?
Iโd lean towards the latter conclusion.
And new emojis are being released all the time.
Hereโs the new ones for 2020:

Conclusion ๐ค
Using emojis in your marketing and communications gives your brand personality and identity.
Whether youโre all about fun and full of energy, or more tongue in cheek, emojis can help humanise your brand.
Defining and using that personality in your marketing can also help to boost brand awareness.
Fun brands stand out, vanilla brands donโt.
And you want to be the business that stands out from the crowd, right? ๐ค
